Paul Thomas: fine art and delicate drawings.

Paul Thomas is an established fine artist, draughtsman, caricaturist, and a seasoned cartoonist.

“ A contemporary vision with the definite nod to the past”, is how Paul describes his approach to depicting both Venice landscape painting. Passionate and prolific, he takes his inspiration from  nature in the English countryside. Areas such as south Devon, Dorset, London, Oxfordshire and Yorkshire, and latterly from the romantic Venice provide creative fuel to fire his imagination.  He also enjoys painting still-life and portraits, including miniature pieces.

He paints on stretched box canvases with acrylic paint combining his draughtsman’s sensibility with the blending colours, as well as finer mark-making that characterised his newspaper work. The results often create striking, surprising combinations and forms. His artwork spans both realism and abstraction, and we may find cherries dancing on distant fields, snails emerging from the surf or giant figs nestling among the hills. Paul’s other talent lays in fine, almost ornate, perspective twisting drawings of Intricate architectural subjects like palaces, historic buildings or his surroundings. Some of the notable subjects include Blenheim Palace, Tate Britain and Royal Academy of Art in London as well as fascinating buildings in Venice and Dieppe.

Paul is also a well-known cartoonist, having worked for most of the UK’s biggest newspapers, most recently the Daily Mail, and before that, for the Daily Express, the Sunday Telegraph, the Independent, Evening Standard, Daily Telegraph and The Guardian. He also created drawings for publication and broadcast Channel 4, Sky Television. He was the Cartoon Arts Trust’s Cartoonist of the Year; Political Cartoon Society, Gilray Goblet. He was named as one of the “Britain’s Best Political Cartoonists”, recognising him as one of the nation’s finest cartoonists.

He is also a talented author and illustrator and has written two books. Paul’s latest book A Tabloid History of Birdwatching was published in November 2018. The previous book An Unreliable History of Tattoos was published in 2016. Both books comprise collections of watercolour, pen and ink drawings, caricatures and storytelling that springs from his outlandish imagination. Some of the testimonials included: “… a breath-taking work of art and an historical document...”, “…full of painful puns, wacky pictures and a playfully irreverent attitude.”

For years Paul explored different fields, employed diverse techniques, emerging as an established multi-media savvy and versatile artist. In this journey to become a free-lance artist, he always demonstrated his immense passion for art and culture.

“I was so impressed with the way in which Paul Thomas interpreted my brief. The hugely detailed cartoon is packed with significance and the likeness is really uncanny. The picture was given as a present to celebrate the end of exams and was a great success. Better still, Paul created the cartoon really promptly, checked the detail with me before going ahead, and framed it for me too, so the whole process was a real pleasure. Commissioning Paul Thomas is to be highly recommended.” Julia - PR Consultant - Oxford
